The Flag of Yemen.West Asia with Yemen in red.

Slightly larger than twice the size of Wyoming, the Yemen Republic was created on May 23, 1990 as a result of the union of the Yemen Arab Republic and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen. Located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, it is a prime area for agriculture. Sana is its political capital and Aden is its commercial capital.

Yemen’s location on the chief mountain range of the Arabian peninsula is the rationale for its climate. Hundreds of microclimates, which are beneficial to its varied crops, inhabit the region. Jabal Nabi Shu'ayb is the highest on the peninsula.

The estimated population is 22.2 million people. The majority of its inhabitants are of Arab descent. Afro-Arabs, South Asians and Europeans also exist in smaller numbers.

The official language is Arabic. Sunni and Shiite Islamic religions are those practiced primarily in Yemen. Jewish, Christian, and Hindu religions are practiced in smaller numbers.

For hundreds of years, Yemen was isolated from the rest of the world, and as a result, suffered in terms of education and healthcare. Its literacy rate is among the lowest internationally, at 50 percent.

Yemen is a parliamentary republic.

The monetary unit is the rial.
