Andorra, whose official name is Principality of Andorra (Principat d'Andorra), is located between France and Spain in the eastern Pyrenees. It is about half the size of New York City with an area of 181 square miles (468 square kilometers).
The population was estimated at 71,822 with an annual growth of 0.84 percent in 2007.
The capital and largest City is Andorra la Vella.
Andorra is made up of several large ethnic groups. The largest groups are the Spanish and native Andorrans, followed by the Portuguese and French. The official language is Catalan. Castilian Spanish, French and Portuguese are also spoken.
Most Andorrans are Roman Catholics.
From 1278 to 1993, Andorra was under the joint sovereignty of the president of France and the Spanish bishop of Urgel. However, a new constitution, ratified by referendum on March 14, 1993 established Andorra as a democratic, 'parliamentary' co-principality with full sovereignty in the hands of the people. The co-princes (the bishop of Urgel and the president of the French Republic) were retained as the constitutional heads of state but their powers are much reduced.
Their monetary unit is the Euro (€).
