Belgium
is located in northwestern Europe and is bordered to
the north by the Netherlands, to the northwest by the
North Sea, to the south and west by France,
and to the east by Luxembourg and Germany.
It is 12,566 square miles (32,547 square kilometers)
in size, which is about the size of Maryland and Brussels
is the capital. The estimated population in 2006 was
10,379,067.
Belgium has three official languages: Flemish (Dutch), French, and German. Although Belgians are divided in language, they are united in their religion. Most of the people are Roman Catholics.
Belgium is a federal parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy and the current king, Albert II, succeeded to the throne on the death of his brother, Baudouin I, in 1993.
The unit of currency is the euro (€).
