Germany
is located in Western Europe, bordering the North Sea
between France and Poland and
sharing boundaries with
Denmark and
the Baltic Sea (north), Poland and the Czech
Republic (east), Austria (southeast), Switzerland (south),
France (southwest), Luxembourg, Belgium,
and the Netherlands (west), and the North Sea (northwest).
Germany is slightly smaller than Montana, with a total
area of 137,847 square miles (357,021 square kilometers)
and its capital is Berlin. The fall of the Berlin Wall
in the late 1980s allowed the unification of East Germany
and West Germany. Germany today is a federation of 16
Länder
(states).
The population of Germany in 2006 was estimated at 82,422,299
and German is the official language. The Protestant Reformation
began in Germany. Religious battles once turned Roman
Catholics and Protestants against each other, but they
now live peacefully side by side.
The euro replaced the deutsche mark as the official currency
in 2002.
