Italy,
officially the Italian Republic, is located in southern
Europe. It consists of a long, boot-shaped peninsula
that stretches from the Alps down into the central portion
of the Mediterranean Sea. Italy also includes the two
large Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

the north, and France to
the north-west. The Adriatic Sea is to the East of Italy
and the Mediterranean is to the south and west.
Italy, occupying an area slightly larger than Arizona, became a republic after World War II and today the president, prime minister, cabinet, and parliament form the government.
The population of Italy as of July, 2006 was 58,133,509 and the capital city is Rome. The official language is Italian and some 81 percent of Italian citizens are Roman Catholic. The unit of Italian currency is the Euro (€).
