The
Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a landlocked country in
Western Europe of 998
square miles (2,586 square kilometers), which
is slightly smaller than the state of Rhode Island. Luxembourg
is bordered on the south by France and on the west and
north by Belgium. The eastern boundary with Germany is
formed by the Our, Sûre (Sauer),
and Moselle rivers.
Luxembourg's capital city, Luxembourg, is located in the south-central part of the country.
Luxembourg's population in 2006 was estimated at 474,413. The country is historically Roman Catholic and it is estimated that over 90 percent of the population are nominally members of this church. The largest Protestant denominations are the Lutheran and Calvinist churches. The major languages are Luxembourgisch (Lëtzebuergesch; official), German and French.
The Luxembourg franc was replaced by the euro (€) as the official currency in 2002.
Luxembourg is a hereditary constitutional monarchy. The ruling family is the house of Nassau-Weilburg; the present head of state, Grand Duke Henri, came to the throne in 2000.
