The
Kingdom of Norway lies on the western side of the Scandinavian
Peninsula, sharing a border with Sweden.
It also borders Finland and Russia to
its far north. Norway is very long and narrow. It
is partly in the Arctic Circle and is known as the Land
of the Midnight Sun. Norway faces seas to the south,
west, and north: on the south the Skagerrak and the
North Sea, on the west the North Sea and the Norwegian
Sea, and the Barents Sea to the north.
Most inhabitants of Norway live in the south and near the sea. Norway has 13,049 miles of coastline including many fjords and bays. About two-thirds of the country is mountainous. It includes 50,000 islands off its much indented coastline. The country is rich in natural resources, in particular energy resources. The Norwegian Sea is rich in oil and gas. In addition to energy resources, there are fish and forest resources.
Norway is a sparsely populated country, with a population of approximately 4.6 million people. Norway today is a hereditary constitutional monarchy, with a parliamentary system of government. The Parliament is called the Storting. King Harold V was crowned in 1991.
The capital of Norway is Oslo. The Norwegian language is a member of the Scandinavian group of Germanic languages and is close to Danish and Swedish. Norway claims 100 percent literacy. 85.7 percent of the population belongs to the Church of Norway which is Evangelical Lutheran.
