Poland
is located in Central Europe. It is bordered by the Baltic
Sea on the north and shares borders with Germany,
the Czech
Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania,
and Russia.
Poland is slightly smaller than New Mexico. Poland has a republic form of government with the president elected by popular vote to a five-year term, with eligibility for a second term. The capital is Warsaw. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. Its currency is the Euro (€).
The July 2006 estimate of the population was 38,536,869 with a slight negative population growth rate of .05 percent. The current life expectancy is 74.97 years, with women outliving men by slightly over eight years.
Polish is the official language of Poland. Poland has a very high literacy rate of 99.8 percent. Over 89 percent of the population is Roman Catholic.
