Slovenia, an independent country since June of 1991, is
located in central Europe.
It borders Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Austria and
the Adriatic Sea. The capital is Ljubljana.
Slovenia has a long history as part of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, later becomming a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and eventually being a part of the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Slovenia is now a parliamentary democracy with an executive branch headed by Janez Janša, the current Prime Minister.
The population of Slovenia is over 2 million, but this ranks low among European countries for population density. The main ethnic group is Slovenian which accounts for approximately 83 percent of the population. The official language is Slovenian, a Slavic language. Hungarian and Italian are also considered official languages, particularly in areas bordering Italy and Hungary. The population is traditionally Roman Catholic. Slovenia has been a model of economic success in the region. They have the highest per capita GDP in central Europe.
The geography of Slovenia varies greatly, including high Alpine peaks, forests, grasslands and coastal areas. Likewise the climate varies from sub-mediterranean with hot summers to cold snowy winters. Slovenia is slightly smaller than New Jersey.
The famous Lipizaner horses, the elegant white horses of the Viennese Spanish Riding School, originated in the town of Lippiza in Slovenia.
