The
Kingdom of Sweden shares the Scandinavian Peninsula
with Norway located
to its west. Sweden is the largest of the Scandinavian
countries, 173,686 square miles in size, which is approximately
the size of California. It is a long narrow country
and, as well as bordering Norway, Sweden also shares
a land border with Finland in
the north. The Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Sea are
to the east and south.
Approximately 9 million people live in Sweden and 99 percent of the population is literate. The capital is Stockholm and the language is Swedish. About 87 percent of Swedes belong to the state church, which is the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
There are more than 100,000 lakes in the central region of Sweden. The northern region is a rugged, wooded area while the southern region has the most pleasant climate. There you find gently rolling fields, sandy beaches and the best agricultural land. Sweden's natural resources include: iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, tungsten, uranium, arsenic, feldspar, timber, and hydropower.
Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament called the Riksdag and a prime minister. The current king is Charles XVI Gustav who was crowned in 1973. This prosperous and peaceful country enjoys one of the highest standards of living in Europe.
