Greenland is the world’s largest island. It is located northeast of Canada between the Artic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. Greenland is slightly more than three times the size of Texas with over 80 percent of the country covered with ice caps. The capital, Nuuk, is located on the southwestern coast of Greenland and is home to almost 25 percent of the country’s population. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but is a self-governing parliamentary democracy. The High Commissioner is appointed by the Queen of Denmark. The Prime Minister is elected by parliament and is usually the leader of the majority party. The currency is the Danish krone.
Greenland has a very stable population; the July 2007 estimate of the population was 56,344 with only a slightly negative population growth rate of .03 percent. The current life expectancy is 70.23 years with women outliving men by over seven years.
Languages spoken in Greenland are Greenlandic (East Inuit), Danish, and English. The country has an amazing 100 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15. Evangelical Lutheran is the majority religion.
There are few roads in Greenland outside of the towns. Transportation between towns is either by sea or air.
