Ecuador is located on the west coast of South
America with the Pacific Ocean and the Galapagos
Islands to the west. It is bordered by Colombia to
the north and Peru to
the east and south. Overall, the country is slightly
smaller than Nevada. The capital of Ecuador
is Quito. The currency is the U.S. dollar; the sucre
was eliminated in 2000.
Ecuador has a republic form of government. The president and vice president run on the same party ticket and are elected by popular vote to a four-year term. They may be elected again, but cannot serve consecutive terms.
The 2007 estimate of the population is 13,755,680 with a population growth rate of 1.55 percent. Ecuadorians have a life expectancy of 76.62 years with women outliving men by six years.
Spanish is the official language of Ecuador; Amerindian languages are also spoken especially Quechua. Ecuador has a 92.5 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15. Over 95 percent of the population is Roman Catholic.
The equator runs through northern Ecuador. The Galapagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin, are a part of the country.
