Guyana is located on the northern coast of South
America with the North Atlantic Ocean to its north.
It shares borders to the west with Venezuela,
to the south with Brazil,
and to the east with Suriname.
In size, the country is slightly smaller than Idaho.
The capital, Georgetown, is located on the coast. Guyana
has a republic form of government. The president is
elected by popular vote in parliamentary elections
which are required to be held at least every five years.
There are no term limits. The currency is the Guyanese
dollar.
The 2007 estimate of the population is 769,095 with a very small population growth rate of 0.23 percent. One of the reasons for this low population growth rate is a high mortality rate, both infant and adult, from AIDS. The current life expectancy of a Guyanese is 66.17 years with women outliving men by five years.
The main languages spoken in Guyana are English (the official language), Amerindian dialects, Creole, Caribbean Hindustani, and Urdu. There is a 98.8 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15 who have attended school. Fifty percent of the population is Christian; other major religions are Hindu and Muslim.
