Venezuela is the northern most county in South
America. It borders the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean to the north; Colombia to the west, Brazil to the south; and Guyana to the east. The county is slightly more than twice the size of California. Venezuela has a federal republic form of government. The president is elected by popular vote for a six-year term with eligibility for a second term. The capital is Caracas which is located on the coast. The Venezuelan currency is the bolivar.
The 2007 estimate of the population is 26,023,528 with a population growth rate of 1.49 percent. The current life expectancy is 73.28 years with women outliving men by over six years.
Spanish is the official language; however, there are many indigenous dialects. Venezuela has a 93 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15. Over 96 percent of the population is Roman Catholic.
Venezuela can lay claim to the world's highest free-falling fresh water waterfall, Angel Falls (3,212 feet).
