Declaration of Independence

*

The Declaration of Independence is considered to be one of America's most important founding documents. It is the document in which the thirteen original colonies declared themselves independent of Great Britain. The original document was drafted by Thomas Jefferson. With modification it was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There were fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence including two future presidents, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. The most famous signature on the document was that of John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress.

The Declaration of Independence is on display in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
