The Vietnam War or Conflict lasted from 1959 to 1975 and was fought between communist forces in North Vietnam backed by Russia and China and the anti-communist forces of the Republic of Vietnam and its allies, most notably the United States. This was the height of the Cold War and U.S. and world leaders worried that it might escalate into WWIII.
The conflict occurred under the presidencies of Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon and the United States became deeply divided on participating in the conflict. The U.S. deployed advisors in the 1950s, and then large numbers of combat troops started arriving in Vietnam in 1965 till the last departed in 1973.
Tactics in the conflict varied from clashes between small units patrolling the jungles to U.S. aircraft bombing campaigns, including the spraying of chemical defoliants. Two years after the United States withdrew its forces, Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces and the war ended on April 30, 1975.
