Édouard Manet was born in Paris and has been seen as the first modernist and/or the last "old master.” He rejected the traditions of the formal art world and ultimately helped to turn that universe upside down. He met with constant criticism and abuse during his career but clung stubbornly to his forward-looking view of art's mission. His far-reaching influence on French painting and the general development of modern art was due to his portrayal of everyday subject matter, his use of broad, simple color areas, and a vivid, summary brush technique. He concentrated on portraying the impact of daylight on the objects to be painted, and he insisted on painting landscapes out-of-doors.
