Roald Dahl is a much-loved children’s book author. Born on September 13, 1916 in Wales, he was educated in British public schools and served in the British Royal Air Force and as Assistant Air Attache´ in Washington D.C. in World War II (1942-1943). He married the American film actress Patricia Neal, and they had five children.
Roald Dahl wrote adult novels, poetry, short stories, screenplays, and children’s books. Movies in which he has been involved include You Only Live Twice (1967), Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang (1968), Willy-Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971 and 2005), The BFG (1989), Danny, Champion of the World (1989), Dirty Beasts/Revolting Rhymes/The Witches (1990), Matilda (1996), James and the Giant Peach (1996), and The Enormous Crocodile (1999). He died on November 23, 1990, near Oxford, England.
Roald Dahl wrote 18 children’s books, all humorous and filled with eccentric characters. Adult opinions of them have not always been positive, but they have been very popular with children over many years in both the U.S. and Britain.
There are numerous biographies of Roald Dahl. He himself
wrote two autobiographies, Boy (about his school
years) and Going Solo (about his years as an
RAF pilot).
