Coretta Scott King was the wife of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. After his assassination, she became a civil rights leader in her own right. Each year the American Library Association awards the Coretta Scott King Award, honoring African American authors and illustrators who promote themes of social justice in children’s and young adult literature.
