Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister in Montgomery, Alabama who was central to the civil rights movement in the 1960s. As the head of the Montgomery Improvement Association, he led the bus boycott in Montgomery that led to the Supreme Court decision against segregation in public transportation. In 1957, he founded and became President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968 while leading a protest for better wages and working conditions for sanitation workers. James Earl Ray was arrested in London in June of 1968 and charged with his murder.
Martin Luther King’s birthday was January 15, and, since being signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the third Monday of January has been celebrated as a national holiday.
