The Rolling Stones

*

The Rolling Stones, a British rock group, were formed in London, England, in 1962. Since then, no other rock band has matched their combination of popularity, longevity, and productivity, and no group aside from the Beatles has wielded greater influence on the development of rock music. Numerous concert films document the excitement the Stones have continued to generate in live performances.

The core members of the Rolling Stones are lead vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, and drummer Charlie Watts. Another musician associated with the group during its first four decades is bassist Bill Wyman, who announced his retirement in January 1993 after 30 years with the band. As well as Wyman, former members include, Brian Jones and Ian Stewart (both deceased) and Mick Taylor. The band presently consists of Jagger, Richards, Watts, and Ron Wood.

The Stones have released 29 albums of original work and compilations, and have had 37 top-10 singles. They received a lifetime achievement award (1986) from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Jagger received a knighthood in December 2003.
