Sonia Sotomayor

*

On August 6, 2009, by a Senate vote of 68 to 31, Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic, third woman, and 111th person to serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court. Sotomayor was born to Puerto Rican immigrants in the Bronx and grew up in a public housing project. She won a scholarship to Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1976. At Yale Law School, she edited the Yale Law Journal. Following law school, Sotomayor served as Assistant District Attorney of Manhattan for five years. In 1992 President George H. W. Bush appointed Sotomayor to the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. During her tenure on this court, she issued one of her most famous rulings, ending the 1995 Major League Baseball strike by issuing an injunction against baseball team owners for alleged violations of the National Labor Relations Act. In 1998, President Clinton nominated Sotomayor to the United States Court of Appeals 2nd Circuit, where she served until her appointment to the Supreme Court.
