Prior to becoming Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 1710, Alexander Spotswood spent time in the British military where he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was actively involved in trying to maintain peace with the local Indian tribes. While in office he acquired an 85,000-acre estate in Spotsylvania County to which he retired after he was removed from office in 1722. He spent the years 1724 to 1730 in England initially defending his land titles. He returned to America in 1730 after his appointment as deputy postmaster general for the American colonies. Spotswood died in 1740 while preparing to fight in the war against Spain.
