Luther Robinson first appeared on stage at the age of six. He performed exclusively in black theaters in his early life, and was 50 before he appeared before white audiences. His first performance before a white audience was in Lew Leslie's Blackbirds of 1928. His most-remembered roles were as an antebellum butler opposite Shirley Temple or Will Rogers. He died of a chronic heart condition in 1949.
