Cyrus McCormick was the developer of the mechanical reaper. With his machine, farmers could cut in one day what had previously taken two weeks to cut with hand tools. Although the McCormick reaper was invented in 1832, it was not immediately marketed pending improvements. After experiencing difficulties with the low quality of the reapers manufactured by licensees, Cyrus McCormick centralized production in one factory in Chicago.
