Edmund Randolph graduated William and Mary College and then studied law with his father. The Revolutionary War broke up their partnership. He was appointed Virginia's Attorney General in 1776 and continued with this appointment even after being elected to the Continental Congress in 1779. In 1786 he was elected governor. When the new national government was formed, George Washington appointed Edmund Randolph Attorney General. He was appointed Secretary of State in 1794, but resigned in 1795 when false charges of bribery were raised. He continued practicing law after his resignation and died at his estate in 1813.
