Fitzhugh Lee graduated West Point in 1856 and served in the army until the Civil War. He resigned his commission and accepted a commission in the Army of Northern Virginia. He served in central and northern Virginia. He was elected governor of Virginia in 1885. He was named Consul General to Havana and continued at his post during the Spanish-American war.
