James Madison received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton in 1771. In 1776 he served on the Virginia convention that supported independence. He served on the Continental Congress from 1780-1783. He was a proponent of stronger national government. He was also a member of the Constitutional Congress in 1787. He was President Jefferson's Secretary of State before being elected president in 1808.
