James Ewell Brown Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854. He served with the cavalry first in Texas and then in Kansas fighting against Indians, as well as John Brown and his southern counterparts. When the Civil War broke out, he resigned his commission and joined the Confederate army. He quickly made a name for himself on the battlefield. He was promoted in 1862 to command the entire Confederate cavalry. Historians blame him for the disastrous Confederate defeat at Gettysburg. Stuart was shot outside of Richmond on May 11, 1864 and died one day later from his wound.
