John Marshall attended William and Mary College, studying law after his military service in the Revolutionary War. He declined an offer from President George Washington to be Attorney General, and an offer from President John Adams to serve on the Supreme Court. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1798 and became Secretary of State in 1800. Shortly thereafter he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
