Best known as "John Randolph of Roanoke," John Randolph had some formal schooling, but gained most of his knowledge from private reading. Prior to his running for Congress in 1799, he had little interest in politics, and was well known for his gadabout ways and lack of goals in his life. He served in Congress from 1799-1829 except for 1813-1815 and 1817-1819. In the last years of his life he suffered from dementia, possibly brought on by his excessive drinking and use of opium.
