John Smith became a hero in American history primarily due to boasts about his own supposed exploits. Such boasting was mainly designed to lure new settlers to America. Although he inherited land from his father, John Smith opted for a more adventurous life. In 1606 he boarded a ship with other colonists bound for America. Historians question whether the famous incident with Pocahontas actually took place. John Smith explored much of Virginia and served for a short time as leader of Jamestown. He went back to England in 1609 and never returned to America.
