John Tyler was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1811. Subsequently, he was elected to the Virginia Council of State, the U.S. House of Representatives, the governorship of Virginia and the U.S. Senate. President Harrison's death a month after his inauguration made Tyler the first vice president to succeed to the presidency.
