Jubal Early was an 1837 graduate of West Point. He only served in the army until 1838, when he resigned and took up the study of law. He volunteered for the Mexican War and served during 1847, then returned to his law career. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he entered the Confederate Army where he rose to the rank of lieutenant general.
