Maggie Lena Walker was an African-American entrepreneur and civic leader. She was born in 1867 in Richmond, Virginia. Despite the family's poverty, Walker persevered through the city school system and graduated from the Colored Normal School in 1883. She taught school for three years, but gave up her job when she married Armstead Walker, Jr. She joined a fraternal organization, the Independent Order of St. Luke and eventually under her leadership, this organization founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903. By 1931 it had merged with the two remaining African-American banks in Richmond, to form the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company. She is often described as the first woman bank president.
