Martha Washington was the daughter of John Dandridge, a planter, and Frances Jones. In 1750, at the age of 19, she married Daniel Parke Custis. The marriage produced four children, only two survived early childhood. She was widowed by age 26. On Jan. 6, 1759, she married Colonel Washington and moved to Mount Vernon. In 1789 when Washington was elected the first president of the United States, Martha became the first "First Lady." The Washingtons returned to Mount Vernon in 1797 and resumed their private lives. Martha died on May 22, 1802.
