Opechancanough (1556?-1646)

*
Opechancanough.

Opechancanough was a Native American tribal leader from the area approximately 20 miles north of Richmond. It is rumored that his father was a Mexican. He played a major role in negotiations between the English settlers and other tribes from 1607-1618. He took the settlers' side in a significant attempt to conquer the Chickahominy Indians in 1616; however, he later turned against the English due to the English greed and disregard for Native American property rights. He led wars against the English in 1622 (lasting almost 10 years) and again in 1644. He was captured in 1646 and killed while a prisoner.
