Pocahontas was one of the daughters of Powhatan, head of the Powhatan confederacy. It is questionable whether the story of her saving the life of John Smith actually happened. In 1613 she was captured by the English and taken to Jamestown in the hope of using her as a bargaining agent against her father. While there she was converted to Christianity. She met, fell in love with, and married John Rolfe. In 1616 she voyaged to England with her husband, brother-in-law, and several Indian maids. She planned to return to Virginia in 1617, but before sailing became ill and died.
