Powhatan (1550?-1618)

*

Powhatan was the leader of the Renapé-speaking tribes in the Virginia area during the time the English were attempting to establish their first permanent settlement. He was also the father of Pocahontas. He was extremely suspicious of the first English settlers due to previous bad experiences with the greed of Europeans for land, slaves and riches. With the marriage of Pocahontas to John Rolfe, Powhatan concluded a treaty with the English, which lasted until his death in 1618.
