Samuel Jackson Snead (Slammin' Sammy) was an all-around athlete in high school participating in football, basketball, baseball and track. His first contact with golf came when he became a caddy for a golf course near his home. As a caddy, Sam Snead was allowed to play at a nearby nine-hole golf course. Thus began his love of golf. He turned pro in 1937 and in his first year won four golf tournaments. His tournament wins and awards are too numerous to mention. He retired in 1979 at age 67.
