Shirley MacLaine, born 1934, began acting while she was still in high school. She performed in the chorus during a production on Oklahoma! Her first movie role was in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry. In the 1960s and 1970s she was politically active in the civil rights movement and anti-Vietnam War protests, in addition to campaigning for Robert Kennedy and George McGovern. She wrote a series of controversial New Age books. She won an Oscar in 1984 for Terms of Endearment.
