Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was an 1846 graduate of West Point where he received his commission in time to participate in the Mexican War. He resigned in 1851 to become an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute, but accepted a commission as a colonel in the Virginia military at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was mistakenly shot by his own men during a night reconnaissance, and died on May 10, 1863.
