Walter Reed received his M.D. from University of Virginia in 1869 and another from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1870. After practicing medicine a short time he was commissioned in the United States Medical Corps. He was assigned to a medical board that was able to prove that typhoid fever was spread by flies and contact with fecal material. In 1900 he was appointed head of the Army's commission on yellow fever. Through experimentation on volunteers, the commission was able to conclusively prove that yellow fever was spread by the Aëdes aegypti mosquito. Dr. Reed died of acute appendicitis in 1902.
