William Clark and his partner Meriwether Lewis led an expedition proposed by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the continent and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. The expedition lasted from 1804-1806 and provided vast amounts of information about the country and its inhabitants (both human and animal).
