Although William McGuffy had a long and distinguished career as a college and university professor, he is best known for his series of Eclectic Readers for elementary school students. The six books, plus the Eclectic Spelling Book written by his brother, went through multiple editions and revisions and became the best-known readers of all time. They were used in 37 states and sold over 122 million copies. Mr. McGuffey spent the last part of his life (1845-1873) as a professor of moral philosophy at the University of Virginia.
