Zachary Taylor spent his formative years in Kentucky. His only formal education was provided by a tutor, Elisha Ayres. Taylor's 40-year military career of forty years began with his appointment as first lieutenant in the 7th Infantry in 1808. On June 18, 1810, he married Margaret Mackall Smith. Zachary Taylor became the 12th president of the United States in 1849 - the last Whig president. Taylor attended the laying of the cornerstone of the Washington Monument on July 4, 1850, sitting for hours in the hot sun. That night he suffered a cholera attack and died five days later.
