American football, known in the United States simply as football, is a competitive team sport. The object of the game is to carry the ball to the opposing team's end zone and score points. The team with the most points when time has expired wins. In other countries, the sport is usually referred to as American football to differentiate it from soccer and rugby. American football evolved as a separate sport from rugby in the late 19th century.
In professional football, the National Football League (NFL) is divided into two conferences: the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The conferences are further divided into geographically oriented divisions: East, North, South and West. Each division has four teams.
