Golf is a sport in which a player uses a long-shafted club to propel a small, hard ball around a large area of land. The objective is to hit the ball into each of the successive holes in the least number of strokes. A full course has 18 holes. The sport is played by men and women of all ages.
Although the exact origin of the game of golf is unknown, we know that people have played games with balls and sticks since ancient times. Some historians think that the first true golfers were shepherds who passed the time by using their wooden staffs to knock small stones into holes.
The Scots are credited with originating the modern game of golf. The first national golf championship was held in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland in 1860. Initially, the annual affair was limited to professionals, but in 1861 the championship was declared "open to the entire world," and it became known as the British Open.
The U.S. Open for Men and the Men's and Women's Amateur tournaments were inaugurated by the United States Golf Association (U.S.G.A.) in 1895. The Open Championship for women was first held in 1946.
