Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice. It is most popular as a sport in areas that are sufficiently cold for natural ice. Although there are 64 total members of the International Hockey Federation, seven countries have dominated the sport: Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and the United States.
Ice hockey is played on a rink. During normal play, there are six players per side on the ice at any time, each on ice skates. There are five players and one goaltender per side. The players control the puck (rubber disk) using a long stick with a blade that is curved at one end. Today there are 30 teams in the National Hockey League which includes teams in the U.S. and Canada.
