*

The professional ice hockey team based in Washington D.C. is called the Washington Capitals. They joined the National Hockey League as an expansion team for the 1974-75 season. The team was owned by Abe Pollin. Pollin built the Capital Centre in suburban Landover, Maryland to house the Capitals and later he sold the Capitals to Ted Leonsis in 1999. The team colors are black, blue, and bronze. Its home arena is Verizon Center located on F St.

The first season, they set an NHL record for losses, relinquishing 67 of 80 games. For 14 years in a row beginning in 1983 they made the playoffs but developed a reputation for choking in the finals. The Capitals have never won the Stanley Cup, the championship trophy the National Hockey League.
